Are you a slacker? – Proverbs 26

“As a door turns on its hinges, so the slacker turns on his bed.” – Proverbs 26:14

I have to say, I just love the visual presented by this proverb. The slacker turns on his bed the way a door turns on its hinges.

Leave it to Proverbs to find the perfect figure of speech to describe a lazy person! I am a side sleeper, so on those occasions when I have trouble sleeping, I can feel just like a door turning back and forth.

Am I a slacker? Sometimes I can be, although I prefer to think of myself as a procrastinator. That makes it sound like I am merely postponing my work rather than avoiding it altogether.

Po-TAY-toh, po-TAH-toh. A rose by any other name. No matter what you call it, nothing is getting done whether you’re a slacker or a procrastinator. A good reason to decide never to be either.

Of course, we need to take this all with the understanding that it is God who commands us to rest every seventh day. The key, as it so often seems to be, is finding the perfect balance between hard work and the proper amount of rest.

Examine yourself honestly and God will show you the best way to spend your time. Keep reading Proverbs and you’ll naturally find yourself drawn into the upright, diligent life that you were made for.
