Don’t Be Greedy – Proverbs 25
“If you find honey, eat just what you need, lest you have too much and vomit it up.” – Proverbs 25:16
The book of Proverbs is nothing but practical. Eating sweets until you vomit doesn’t seem to be a temptation that most grownups experience on a daily basis. At least I don’t think anybody I know is tempted that way.
I have known people, though, who would drink alcoholic beverages until they vomited. It doesn’t seem like a very pleasant experience to me, but there are folks who participate in this at least on a weekly basis.
I don’t get it.
But I was able to think of an area where I myself was guilty of a similar type of overindulgence.
I can remember watching television until I gave myself a headache.
I can remember doomscrolling through social media for far longer than would seem reasonable.
I think the latter is a more widespread occurrence than it should be these days. And unfortunately, doomscrolling has wreaked its own special havoc in our society, especially amongst young people, and equally tragically amongst older people, who you’d think would know better.
If you catch yourself staring at your phone for far too long, shut it down and take a look around you. It could be that your spouse, sitting next to you, or maybe your best friend across the café table, is just waiting for the chance to have a real conversation.
It could be that you have been given the opportunity to save your spouse or your friend from yet another afternoon or evening of mindless social media consumption.
