Listen to your father! – Proverbs 3

My son, do not forget my teaching,
but keep my commands in your heart,
for they will prolong your life many years
and bring you peace and prosperity.
Proverbs 3:1-2

In these verses, the son is told that obeying his father’s commands, or taking dad’s advice, will prolong his life many years and bring him peace and prosperity.

When you look at the themes that are repeated throughout the book of Proverbs, it is easy to see how this can be true.

Proverbs is about being wise, following God, keeping your promises, being careful with your money, and eating and drinking well instead of foolishly.

Who could fail to have a long and happy life by following these guidelines? But let’s not read more into this than it plainly says.

Proverbs is a book of good advice and makes no claims to be prophetic. These verses aren’t necessarily a promise from God, but are merely a statement of fact.

Keeping this in mind, we can know that we can still trust the wisdom of Proverbs today.

Most fathers want to give good advice to their children. Things haven’t changed.

And, of course, there have always been rebellious children who like to think they know better than their parents!

So the verses of Proverbs 3:1-2 remain as true as ever. It’s pretty much always a good idea for a son to listen to his father, and a daughter to listen as well.

Proverbs is a book of good advice and makes no claims to be prophetic. These verses aren’t necessarily a promise from God, but are merely a statement of fact.

The good news for all of us? However old or young you might be, there is enough wisdom in Proverbs for everyone!
