Judgment? Who does God think he is?

While the first part of Psalm 1 talks about the blessing of the righteous person who follows the way of God, the second part of the Psalm talks about the judgment imposed on the wicked.

The wicked are like trash that is blown away by the wind. Their path leads only to destruction.

The idea that God will judge our actions is not very popular any more. We somehow think that we should be able to do whatever we want to do with complete impunity.

Who does God think he is? Why should he judge what we do?

Well, of course, God is God. He has every right to judge us. He made us. He knows us best. He designed us to function best by living according to certain norms and standards. When we stray from his plan, we suffer the consequences.

Protesting against this is kind of like saying, why should I need air to breathe? Why can’t I breathe water? Or chocolate?

We are who we are, according to God’s wisdom and design for us. Happily, his plan has only our best interests at heart. Jesus came to save us from the judgment of sin against us.

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. -Jeremiah 29:10-12

Have faith that God will only lead you into what is ultimately for your good. Believe in God’s goodness and trust in his love.
